Biography
Maxine is a Professorial Fellow at Monash University and teaches in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and is a board director at Inner East Community Health. Maxine has a background in health, cancer research, government and management. Maxine began her career in general and specialist nursing and then worked as a Victorian Transplant Coordinator. During this time Maxine completed her Bachelor of Arts and later a Masters Preliminary (Hons) in Sociology. Her interest in health and statistics lead to a research role at the Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer at the Cancer Council Victoria. In 2002 Maxine was elected to the Victorian Parliament. During her eight years in Parliament Maxine was appointed to a range of senior government positions including Parliamentary Secretary for Health followed by her appointment in 2007 as Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development, and Minister for Women’s Affairs. Maxine is a passionate advocate for women’s equality of opportunity, and led major legislative reform in women’s health. Maxine served as CEO of Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) between 2011 and 2014. Maxine was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in 2011, giving her personal insight into the impact and management of a cancer diagnosis.
