Biography
Marie-Emmanuelle Chessel is interested in the economic and social history of contemporary France, being attentive to transnational movements. She works on several research objects. The first is the consumer society. Its approach is centered on the various actors involved in the construction of this sphere: experts in the manufacture of markets (advertising and marketers), activists from consumer associations, etc. In this context, she has conducted personal and collective work on advertising, the relationship between consumption and politics and the history of consumption. The second is the world of business and the business community , in their dealings with society. In this context, she has conducted research on the history of management education in France. It coordinates a collective inquiry at the EHESS on the history of the French Center of Christian Patronage (CFPC), which became the Christian Entrepreneurs and Leaders (EDC) in 2000. Her work has prompted her to concentrate more specifically on Christian actors, in the world of consumption or in the employers' circles. In particular, she questions the role of religion in the "reform" of the economy, in women's and men's organizations . Marie-Emmanuelle Chessel published Consumers committed to the Belle Epoque. The Social League of buyers (Paris, Presses de Sciences Po, 2012) and History of consumption (Paris, La Découverte, 2012).
