Biography
Olivier Pironneau studied at Cambridge and INRIA before being appointed professor of applied mathematics at the University of Paris Nord and then at UPMC in 1985. Director of the Jacques-Louis Lions laboratory of analysis from 1991 to 2000, he held several other administrative functions at UPMC, including those of a member of the University's previous research board and scientific council. Its scientific specialties are optimal control, shape optimization, algorithmics for partial differential equations, mainly for the mechanics of fluids (aeronautics, porous media) and finance (deterministic methods for derivatives).
