Biography
Dr. Elmar Kriegler is vice chair of the Research Domain “Sustainable Solutions” at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). He is a member of the scientific steering committee of the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC), has coordinated several international climate policy scenario projects and has been a core developer of the Shared-Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs) underlying the next generation of scenarios for climate change research. He has served as lead author of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report and is currently serving as a lead author for the Chapter on 1.5°C Mitigation Pathways in the IPCC Special Report on 1.5°C Warming. Elmar Kriegler received a diploma (MS equivalent) degree in physics from the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg, Germany, in 1998, and a PhD degree in physics from the University of Potsdam, Germany, in 2005. Before returning to PIK, Elmar was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University.
Research Interest
His research focuses on the integrated assessment of climate change, scenario analysis and decision making under uncertainty.
