Biography
Mario Calvetti was born in Livorno, Italy on the 19th of May 1948. He made his studies at the University of Pisa where he obtained the degree in physics with "laude" in 1972. After serving in the Army in 1974, he worked as Assistant Professor and INFN Associate at the University of Pisa from 1975 to 1978. From 1972 to 1978 he was a member of the "B-Bbar" (Barion anti Barion) working on an experiment at the ADONE e + e-collider in Frascati. The experiment promptly observed the J / psi particle after the public announcement of its discovery. A search for new narrow resonances, lighter than the J / Psi, was performed and the e + e total cross section in the cm energy interval 1.5-3.1 GeV was measured. In 1978 he went to CERN as a fellow to work at the Initial Cooling Experiment led by Guido Petrucci and Simon Van der Meer. The experiment was proposed to test the technical feasibility of the "stochastic cooling" of stored proton beams. Mario Calvetti took part in the first anti-proton accumulation performed at CERN in the ICE ring. 250 antiprotons (two hundred and fifty) were accumulated in the ring and kept circulating for several hours with periodic injections. It was the first time antiprotons could be observed for such a long time, previously they could only be observed for few sec. Mario Calvetti leads a small team of Phd students to install and run a small experiment that, using an electromagnetic calorimeter placed on a straight section of the ICE accelerator, could detect antiproton decays in the e? ° channel. Antiproton decays were not observed but, from the measurement of the beam intensity decay time, a lower limit of few hours for the anti-proton life time was inferred, several order of magnitude larger than previous measurements.
