Between 1983 and 1990, as a contract professor at the University of Bologna, a supplementary course on the teaching of Topography and Rural Buildings entitled "Technological Installations for the Environmental Control of Animal Husbandry". On August 7, 1990 he received the appointment as a researcher at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Bologna. Prof. Matteo Barbari was appointed as Associate of "Forestry Buildings" by the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Florence, taking up duty on 1/11/1992 at the Department of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering. From that date he has been active and uninterrupted service at the above-mentioned Agrarian Faculty. In December 2004 he was called by the Faculty of Agriculture as a Professor of the Band. He has been serving as an Extraordinary Professor on November 1, 2005. From November 1, 2008 he is Ordinary Professor. From November 1, 1997 to October 31, 2003, he was "Head of Section" (Department of Construction and Land Use) in the Department of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering. The professor. Barbarians since 1 January 2013 is Director of the Agricultural, Food and Forestry Management Department (GESAAF). Previously he was Director of the Department of Economics, Engineering, Agricultural Sciences and Forestry (DEISTAF) in the three-year period 2010/2012. He was Director of the Department of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering for the three-year period 2003/2006 and for the three-year period 2006/2009. In the three-year period 2006-2009 he was deputy chair of the Agrarian Faculty. In 2011 he was Director of the Interuniversity Center for Agricultural Engineering Studies (CISA). He is a member of the Doctoral School Council in Sustainable Management of Agricultural and Forestry Resources. As a member of the Doctoral School of Agro-Forestry Engineering, he has been and is tutor of several PhD students. In recent years, it has devoted itself to deepening various themes, including: a) animal welfare in pigs and cattle breeding. b) Outdoor breeding techniques. c) Housing types for pregnant sows; computerized power, use of bedding. (d) Laying systems for pigs in fattening and fattening. (e) Milk Cows Retention Systems. f) Cost-effective low-cost solutions: use of wood in sheep, bovine, equine breeding. (g) Design and construction of simplified facilities for poultry farming. h) Environmental control: protection from heat; cooling to drop; automatic cooling stations; underground pipes; heat recovery. (i) Reduction of the environmental impact of farms. Treatment of wastewater. l) Recovery of rural buildings. m) Design of agricultural and agro-industrial buildings in hot climate zones. n) Use of innovative design technologies (GPS-GIS) for the enhancement of rural territory. He co-ordinated, as a scientific director, an operational unit under a Multi-Regional Operational Program (POM) entitled: "A program for the diffusion of eco-friendly extensively breeding rabbits and the promotion of high-quality pig meat products "(1997-2001). He participated in the formulation of a major research project, funded by the Emilia Romagna Region, entitled "Effects of Traditional and Innovative Farming Techniques on Animal Welfare", acting as a scientific manager in 4 of the seven planned actions of the project (1998-2001). He has been the scientific director of a three-year project (2002-2005) funded by the Emilia Romagna Region and co-ordinated by CRPA Spa of Reggio Emilia on "Technical-economical comparison between the various construction-plant solutions for the management of waste in dairy cattle farms" . He was also responsible for other projects of the Emilia Romagna Region coordinated by CRPA Spa in 2004-2008: "Evaluation of animal welfare in the bovine sector"; "Assessment of animal welfare in the pigmeat sector"; "Construction costs for livestock hospitals: definition of projects and drafting of metric calculations"; "Pig breeding of pigs in Apennine areas: assessment of health risk"; "Alternative bedding for dairy cows". He was the scientific director of a research unit under nationally relevant programs (MIUR, 2001, biennial) entitled "Alternative design solutions for the implementation of eco-friendly livestock breeding in animal welfare, promotion local resources and the enhancement of quality productions "(National Coordinator S. De Montis -" Technological innovation of livestock breeding "). He has been responsible for a similar project (MIUR, 2003, biennial) titled "Interventions for the realization of suitable conditions of welfare in outdoor or biological breeding farms: the defense from the heat" (National Coordinator prof. G. Cascone - "Building solutions, plants and equipment for the improvement of animal welfare in intensive livestock farming").
