Biography

"Joined Penang Medical College in 2007 as a senior lecturer and is responsible for setting up the Foundation Year programme of the college. Currently co-ordinates and teach in the FY programme. Past academic teaching/administrative experience includes being the Head of the Centre for Pre-University Studies, KDU College Penang (2001-2004). Prior to this, I was a senior lecturer and programme co-ordinator of the Cambridge A-level Programme at Disted College, Penang (1995-1999). While here, I was responsible for setting up the Cambridge A-level programme for the college and was in the pioneer group to design and introduce the 1-year Cambridge A-level and successfully delivered the curriculum; this 1-year programme has since proved to be very popular with students. Past public health experience involves being a medical entomologist with the Ministry of Health of Malaysia, holding the post of State Entomologist for the state of Penang (1988-1995). I worked under the Vector-borne Disease Control Programme looking at the epidemiology of the diseases and the control of the vectors for the five districts of the state. Past medical research experience includes working as a research entomologist with the United States Army Medical Research Unit (USAMRU) at the Institute of Medical Research (IMR) of Malaysia (1986-1988)"

Research Interest

"Worked on the virulent factor of Vibrio cholera; studied on the protection afforded against V. cholera infection afforded by fragments of anti-haemagglutinin. (Master’s thesis) Studied on the biological control of mosquito vectors – developing various application techniques using different formulations of Bacillus thuringiensis against the different mosquito vectors in their respective habitats.(Ph.D thesis) Worked with lab cultures of Plasmodium falciparum – studying on the possible target antigens for transmission-blocking antibodies in the gametocyte population of the isolates (research entomologist with USAMRU)"
