Biography

Bonne van Hattum works as a PhD-fellow with prof. dr. M.B.M. Loos of Amsterdam, Faculty of Law and dr. A.M.C. Loeber, Amsterdam, Faculty of Political Science ("UvA"). Her research project deals about the impact of Limited Fund Financial Mass Claims on Financial Markets. Limited fund financial mass claims are claims where the available financial resources for a market party (bank or insurer) are not enough to pay out (a reasonable) compensation for the loss suffered by all claimants, in which case a bank or insurer, or even a whole financial sector, can go bankrupt. Given the impact of such mass claims, it is important to examine the current settlement system and where necessary, to review this system. By reviewing the system risks of continued distrust and instability of financial markets can be overcome. The further study and review of the current settlement system in this research will take place by means of (empirical) interdisciplinary research within political science, sociology and law. Bonne specialises in both financial law (liability and investment fund issues) and class action inclusive mass claim litigation. During her study at Leiden University, Faculty of Law, she joined a research project regarding class actions and mass claim litigation of the Dexia case. This case inspired her to work as an attorney at the department of Baking & Finance of Baker & McKenzie Amsterdam N.V. and Greenberg Traurig LLP. After 4 years she decided to leave the Bar and joined the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets ("AFM") as a lawyer and strategist on the Strategy, Policy and International Affairs Division. In this team she is responsible for issues regarding (mass) claims, bankruptcy, liability, and ADR systems. Finally, she has been recently an active politician for the Dutch Liberal Democrats ("D66") organises political events as a member of the Talent Program Route66, and as a member of the board of D66 Amsterdam-Central. Because of her research project she decided to be a more passive politician at the moment.
