Biography

Lonneke IJsseldijk works at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Pathology. Here, she leads the department’s research into cetaceans at the request of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. This primarily involves investigating the cause of death of stranded porpoises, but the project also studies the reasons why other cetaceans strand on the beach. Her work consists of performing necropsies on stranded animals, maintaining contacts with the stranding network and partners, and managing of the project finances. One of the main goals of her research is to determine the percentage of the porpoises stranded in the Netherlands died due to human activities. This can include by-catch but also hearing loss. In the context of this research, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine works closely together with other institutes, such as IMARES at Wageningen UR. Within this partnership, researchers look for answers to other research questions in the fields of diet, ecology and toxicology.
