Research Interest
Dan is essentially a human geographer. However, his research interest is located in the interface of human geography and environmental management. Specifically his research covers township environments and small scale livelihood environments. Lately he has investigated evolving trends in the black middle class of South Africa. Two aspects interest him most. Firstly, the generic attitudes, perceptions and roles of the black middle class, also known as the ‘black diamonds’, in the ever changing politico, socio-economic environment of democratic South Africa. Secondly, the struggles, rise and role of female ‘black diamonds’ in South Africa.
