Balgiisa Sheikh Ahmed

Biography

Balgiisa joins Aston University in September 2013 as a postgraduate teaching assistant and PhD candidate. She completed her undergraduate degree in Law with Politics at Keele University in 2011 and graduated with an LLM from the University of Birmingham in 2012. Her LLM dissertation focused on the link between gender inequality, poverty and informal work in India and evaluating the lack of government compliance with international labour standards in the country. Pursuing her interest in labour rights and its role in international law, she is currently conducting doctoral research assessing the ILO’s capacity as the international agency for enforcing labour standards. Her research specifically looks into the strengths and weaknesses of the Decent Work Agenda through analysis of its implementation in the East African region of Somaliland. Her supervisors are Dr David Salmons and Mr Kirit Vaidya. She will teach on Introduction to Jurisprudence & Legal Theory.
