Biography
Professor Williams is Head of the School of Medical Sciences. He is also Consultant Vascular and General Surgeon at Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital, Bangor. He is Clinical Lead in the Department of Vascular Surgery and Wound Healing. In addition, he is an Honorary Senior Lecturer to Cardiff University’s School of Medicine. His other teaching and examining activities are Undergraduate Organiser and Undergraduate Surgical Tutor at Bangor Hospital, examiner in IMRCS (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow), examiner for final clinical examinations to Cardiff University School of Medicine and designated medical supervisor for non-medical prescribers.
Research Interest
Professor Williams’ research focuses on his clinical interests as a practising vascular surgeon. His clinical research can be divided into three main areas: The impact of dedicated service provision on the rates of limb loss in patients with diabetes, patients with lower limb wounds and kidney failure. This subject area already has generated two papers and is ongoing. Determining peri-operative cardiac ischaemia in patients with vascular disease using Troponin T. This study which is attempting to quantify cardiac risk in vascular patients, is in the final stages of data collection and will require statistical analysis. Impact of teaching on venous thrombo-prophylaxis on junior doctor clinical performance. As This aspect of service provision and the role of post-graduate medical education for junior doctors are important healthcare issues. One presentation at international level has resulted from this work.
