James Baker

Biography

James is a theatre maker, academic and artist. He is also Co-Artistic Director of Bootworks Theatre. His work with Bootworks has toured to 12 countries worldwide and has received frequent Arts Council England and British Council support. James has presented his work at The National Theatre, the Southbank Centre, The Museum of Art in Kochi, and once at a funeral. James has been making professional touring work since 2006; notable works include children's show The Incredible Book Eating Boy (an adaptation of Oliver Jeffers' picture book that was translated into Portuguese and Arabic), The Many Doors of Frank Feelbad (a show about bereavement for young audiences) and 30 Days To Space (a durational performance in which James climbed to the height of space on an aluminium ladder in order to become an astronaut) – winning him a Total Theatre Award in the process. Previously James has taught on the undergraduate programme at The University of Portsmouth and guest lectured on the M.A in Advanced Theatre Practice at the Central School of Speech & Drama. James’ specialisms include: children’s theatre work, travel in relation to performance, contemporary theatre practices and live art.
