Biography

"Nigel Camilleri was born in Malta, married to Debbie and the father of three daughters Kate, Neena and Sophie. He studied medicine and surgery at the University of Malta where he was awarded an MD in 2003. He then started practicing medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital, Malta and eventually started his psychiatry training at Mount Carmel Hospital, Malta in 2006. In 2008 he moved over to Newcastle, UK and trained in the Northern Deanery. He is a Tier 4 Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust. He currently works at the Newbury adolescent in-patient unit and Westwood Low Secure Forensic Unit. Previous to this he worked as a locum consultant from September 2013 to March 2014 at the Child and Family Department in Durham. He is also an Associate Clinical Researcher at Newcastle University, currently working with Pediatric Bipolar Disorder Team on research projects in this field. Over his formative training years and during his time working as a volunteer with charities in developing countries (including Palermo, Sicily, Kolkata, India, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Dar Es Salam, Tanzania, Mae Sot, Thailand, Nepal and Malta), he developed a special interest in working with ‘hard to reach’ Young People suffering from multiple complex mental health disorders. In 2011 he had an Out Of Program experience working on the ‘Innovations Project 15-25 years’ which was funded by the Strategic Health Authority, this was partly clinical and partly academic. He was based in an inner-city Darzi walk-in centre in Newcastle-Upon Tyne. There he practiced offering evidence based bio psychosocial individualized therapeutic interventions to ‘hard to reach’ young people. As part of reading for his MD at Newcastle University, he is furthering his research in this area by carrying out a case control study and 2 year follow up study on this cohort of ‘hard to reach’ young people."
