Biography
Sarah Soppitt is an Associate Professor in Criminology & Head of Department of Social Sciences at Northumbria University. ADSS Sarahsoppitt Staffprofile 255 Sarah joined the criminology team at Northumbria University in 2005. Having developed a sustained record of applied criminological research she was awarded an Enterprise fellow in 2015, and became an Associate professor in 2016. Sarah’s research and teaching interest have adopted an applied approach to criminal justice practice and the experience of service users. Sarah has developed a number of key partnerships, early in her career. These were Police focused and then most latterly with Newcastle Youth Offending Team which supports teaching, learning and research agendas. Sarah’s current work with the SkillMill social enterprise company (a spin out company from Northumbria University and the Newcastle Youth offending team) is focusing on the role of employment in supporting desistance from crime. In her role as Head of Department of Social Science Sarah leads a multi-disciplinary team of academic and research staff which represent sociology, criminology, international relations, international development, Journalism, and Mass Communications. Research Interest
Sarah’s research focus has predominantly centered on the value of interventions within the criminal justice arena, and applied criminological enquiry. This has included leading contracts and research projects with key stakeholders from the criminal justice sector, regionally (Police, Probation, Youth Offending, Health, Third Sector Organisations, Police and Crime Commissioner) and nationally (Home Office, Youth Justice Board) and internationally (European College of Policing (CEPOL), EU Atlantis & the University of Tallinn).
