Biography
Steve Oakes is a Senior Lecturer in Marketing who gained his PhD from the School of Psychology at the University of Leicester. In the last REF cycle he published four articles in journals ranked at 3 star by the Association of Business Schools. His articles have been published in a broad range of inter-disciplinary journals including Psychology & Marketing, Journal of Advertising Research, Accounting Forum, Journal of Marketing Management, Marketing Theory, Applied Cognitive Psychology, International Journal of Service Industry Management, Service Industries Journal, Journal of Marketing Communications, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, Accounting and Business Research, and Journal of Services Marketing, amongst others. His specialist area of research focuses upon the influence of music within advertising and service environment contexts. He was the guest editor of a special issue of Marketing Theory entitled Ubiquitous Music. A further strand of his research examines marketing communications issues relating to widening engagement in the arts, as evidenced by his recent receipt of a British Academy Small Grants award of 5,300 pounds. Steve is interested in hearing from potential PhD students in any area of marketing, but particularly in the following five areas: 1. The Impact of Music upon Consumers 2. Arts Marketing 3. Marketing and the Jazz Metaphor 4. Marketing Communications 5. Services Marketing At the University of Liverpool Management School, Steve is the Director of Studies on the MSc Marketing (https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/taught/marketing-msc/overview/) : Our MSc Marketing degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), thus making us a Graduate Gateway university. The Graduate Gateway gives students a unique opportunity to stand out from other marketing graduates by achieving CIM qualifications alongside their marketing degree. CIM partners with leading UK universities to match the content of university marketing degree courses against CIM qualifications to assess where they can award exemptions. This means that students who obtain the MSc Marketing at the University of Liverpool Management School can gain CIM qualifications without having to do all the usual assessments. It embraces contemporary marketing issues with coursework on recent modules including topics such as social media and music downloading applications It incorporates innovative forms of assessment involving live projects in order to blend theory with practice. For example, students have worked on projects with various public and private sector organisations (e.g., Liverpool City Council, Liverpool University Library, Woolton Cinema, Liverpool Farmers’ Markets, etc.) In addition to a dynamic range of academic staff, guest lectures from Marketing Directors (e.g., Millicent Jones from Royal Liverpool Philharmonic) and Marketing Consultants (e.g., Richard Hayes) provide real-world expertise and advice for students Several MSc graduates have successfully progressed to PhD research in marketing at ULMS The ULMS research environment is enriched by major international marketing conferences hosted by the marketing group
