Biography

Jonathan Beaverstock is Interim Head of the School of Economics, Finance and Management, and Professor of International Management. He joined the University of Bristol in January 2014. Previously, Jonathan was Professor of Economic Geography and Director of the 'Integrating Global Society' Research Priority at the University of Nottingham, U.K. (2007-2013). From 1991-2007, he held several positions at Loughborough University, U.K., including Professor and Head of the Department of Geography (2003-2007). He has been awarded Visiting Professorships at the National University of Singapore (Singapore), the University of Ghent (Belgium), the University of Western Sydney (Australia) and the University of Otago (New Zealand). Jonathan is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS) and the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacturing and Commerce (FRSA). Jonathan is a graduate of the University of Wales (BA Geography, 1986) and the University of Bristol (PhD Economic Geography, 1990). Following his PhD, he did post-doctoral research at the University of Bristol in the School of Advanced Urban Studies (1989) and Department of Geography (1990-1991).

Research Interest

As an interdisciplinary social scientist, Jonathan's research spans international business management, economic geography and migration studies, chiefly investigating the internationalization of global professional service firms. Current research focuses on: BREXIT and the competitiveness of the City of London; the global mobility of talent (expatriation, assignments and business travel); highly-skilled international labour migration and UK migration policy; and, the internationalization of global executive search and private wealth management firms. Jonathan's research has been funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Economic and Social Research Council, British Academy, Nuffield Foundation, Leverhulme Trust and, The Alfred Sloan and Anglo-German Foundations. The impact of his research has informed H.M. Treasury, The Corporation of London, the Regional Government of British Columbia, Canada, Abu Dhabi’s Economic Development Council and the (2011) Independent Commission on Banking. Jonathan is currently an Assistant Editor of Global Networks, on the Editorial Board of Mobilities and has been on the Editorial Boards of Geoforum and the Journal of Contemporary European Studies, and is a member of the ESRC's Global Challenges Research Fund peer review college.
