Valerie Smart

Biography

Valerie joined UCLan in July 2016 and is the project manager based at the West Cumberland Medical Education Centre, where she is involved in the development of a range of courses across the campus. Her background includes a career in biochemistry and genetics research as well as being involved in education. Valerie completed a BSc & a PhD in Glasgow before embarking on a post-doctoral research fellowship in the US. This was followed by several years in the pharmaceutical industry and as a research scientist at the Westlakes Research institute where she was involved in several projects investigating chromosomal damage as a result of radiation exposure. For the past 12 years she taught Biology and was Head of Department at an independent boarding school.
