Trevor Davies

Biography

Dr. Trevor Davies is a Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering. He graduated PhD from Cardiff University in 1979 for work on the "Linear and non-linear analysis of pile groups" under the direction of Prof PK Banerjee, one of the pioneers in the rapidly emerging field of boundary element methods. Following post-doctoral research at Cardiff University on the (soil) mechanics aspects of burial of radio-active waste in abyssal sediments, in 1980 he became assistant professor in geotechnical engineering at State University of New York at Buffalo, USA before joining Glasgow University in 1985.

Research Interest

Major research interest is computational solid mechanics. This work concentrates on development of the boundary element approach, which offers some advantages over whole-body discretisation methods. A notable achievement, summarized in the book (Gao & Davies) is the development of a highly efficient boundary element method to solve non-linear (elasto-plastic) problems in three dimensions. In the geotechnical field, this work is exploited in commercial tunnelling software produced by the rock mechanics group of Graz University, Austria. Recent work has concentrated on developing boundary element methods for 3D elasto-dynamics. Enduring interests have been the development of analyses for deep foundations and inverse analysis, amongst others.
