Biography

Professor Lucia Nagib is currently working as a Professor in Film in the Department of Film, Theatre & Television, University of Reading , United Kingdom. Responsibilities: Director of the Centre for Film Aesthetics and Cultures (CFAC - Centre for Film Aesthetics and Cultures) Director of Global Engagement Co-ordinator of the MA courses Areas of Interest: I am the PI of the AHRC-FAPESP funded project, 'Towards an Intermedial History of Brazilian Cinema: Exploring Intermediality as a Historiographic Method' (short title: IntermIdia). This project focuses on cinema's nature as a mixture of arts and media in order to produce the first, groundbreaking intermedial history of Brazilian cinema. It also explores the uses of intermediality as a historiographic method applicable to cinema as a whole. To that end, it brings together scholars from the University of Reading (UoR) and the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), as well as 3 PDRAs, combining expertise in cinematic intermediality, Brazilian cinema, film history, film theory, film and music, film and theatre, film and visual arts, and film and popular culture.  As well as cinematic intermediality, I specialise in world cinema theory, history and geography, which I have explored through a novel approach in many publications, including my most recent single-authored book, World Cinema and the Ethics of Realism. My proposal consists in the adoption of a positive, democratic and inclusive approach to film studies, which rejects the usual binary division that posits world cinema against Hollywood, defining it instead as a polycentric phenomenon with peaks of creation in different places and periods. Once notions of a single centre and primacies are discarded, everything can be placed on the world cinema map on an equal footing, even Hollywood, which instead of a threat becomes a cinema among others. At the core of this proposal is the belief that different cinemas of the world can generate their own, original theories. In multicultural, multi-ethnic societies like ours, cinematic expressions from various origins cannot be seen as 'the other' for the simple reason that they are us. More interesting than their difference is, in most cases, their interconnectedness.   Postgraduate Supervision: I welcome postgraduate students in all areas of world cinema theory, history and geography. I am particularly interested in projects concerned with cinematic realism; intermediality; new waves and new cinemas; national cinemas such as Brazilian, Japanese and German cinemas.
