Biography
Dr McDowall is a cultural historian of late-imperial China based in the School of History, Classics & Archaeology. His research interests include travel writing, material culture and China in the early-modern European imagination, and he is the author of Qian Qianyi's Reflections on Yellow Mountain: Traces of a Late-Ming Hatchet and Chisel (2009). He is particularly interested in xylography and the expansion of the reading public during the Ming period (1368-1644), and he has published on the oldest printed book (an early-Ming imprint dated 1440) in the Edinburgh University Library and its cultural and social significance:
