Biography
He has directed archaeological fieldwork in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas, and his main academic interests lie in historical archaeology, maritime archaeology, anthropological archaeology and cultural heritage management, particularly in the eastern Caribbean and south-western England. He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Rothberg School for Overseas Students), University College London Institute of Archaeology and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University. He also worked briefly as an archaeologist in Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia as a British Institute in Eastern Africa Graduate Scholar.
Research Interest
His area of interest includes Historical archaeology (i.e. 17th century onwards) of the eastern Caribbean: Barbados, St Vincent Grenadines, Maritime ethnography and nautical archaeology in the Caribbean, Traditional Caribbean wooden boat building, The archaeology of marginal Caribbean islands and economies (eg indigo planting, copra, salt), The archaeology and heritage of religious identity in the Caribbean, particularly Sephardic Jewish heritage (collaboration with Rachel Lichtenstein), Estuarine and maritime archaeology of south-west England (in collaboration with Alex Bellisario), Historical archaeology of granite extraction and use on Dartmoor, Devon (in collaboration with Dr Phil Newman, Dr Lee Bray and Dr Laura Basell) and The heritage and material culture of the Jewish east end of London (in collaboration with Rachel Lichtenstein).
