John Cryan

Biography

  John F. Cryan is Professor & Chair, Dept. Anatomy and Neuroscience at University College Cork and is a Principal Investigator in the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, where his research focuses on the “Brain-Gut-Microbe Axis”. He has published over 200 papers and chapters and has been awarded many honours for his research including the inaugural Researcher of the Year award from UCC in 2012 and the University of Utrecht Award for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Research in 2013. John's current research interests include the neurobiological basis of stress-related disorders including depression, anxiety and drug dependence. Moreover, his group is also focused on understanding the interaction between brain, gut & the microbiome and how it applies to stress and immune-related disorders, including IBS, obesity and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism. He is also interested in applying novel approaches to facilitate drug/siRNA delivery to the brain in vivo.  John graduated with a B.Sc. Biochemistry and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from NUI Galway. His research career has been spent at the University of Melbourne, Australia, the University of Pennsylvannia, Philadelphia, The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, California and as a Group Leader at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, Basel, Switzerland before returning to UCC in 2005.
