Biography

Julie Putnam Hart, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Ohio Dominican University. She received her M.A. in International Peace Studies in 1992 and PhD in Sociology in 1995, both from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Hart was an Associate Professor of Sociology and Peace Studies at Bethel College in Kansas from 1994-2006. Hart specializes in areas of causes of collective violence, nonviolent social change, ethnic relations and conflict resolution. Her research has focused on dynamics of social change in political and educational organizations. Her early research focused on dynamics of social change in political and educational organizations. Currently, her research examines dynamics of significant identity change among anti-war U.S. veterans. Dr. Hart has volunteered with Christian Peacemaker Teams each summer since 1997 doing human rights work in Israel/Palestine and currently Colombia. She lived and worked in Guatemala for two years doing peace & justice education with the Mennonite Church and speaks Spanish fluently. She teaches a course for ODU students every other year on poverty and development onsite in Guatemala. Dr. Hart enjoys gardening, reading, walking and biking.
