Biography

Sharon Murphy is a lecturer in English, with special interests in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature (particularly fiction), children’s literature (especially of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries), the relationship between the novel and empire, the history of the book and of reading, and the work of Maria Edgeworth. Prior to the formation of the School of English, DCU, she was a lecturer in the English Department of Patrick's College, Drumcondra. Previous experience also included stints as an assistant lecturer in St. Patrick's College and in the School of English, Trinity College. She also held a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at Trinity College between 2005 and 2007, and worked as a part-time or visiting lecturer there for several years. Dr. Murphy is Chairperson of the Masters programme in Children’s and Young Adult literature, where she teaches on eighteenth and nineteenth century children's literature, and supervises MA theses. She is also heavily involved with the delivery of the department’s undergraduate curriculum, and teaches across key periods and genres.

Eighteenth and nineteenth century literature (especially the novel), children's literature (particularly of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries), the relationship between the novel and empire, and the history of the book and of reading.
