Michael T. Mccurdy, Md

Biography

Dr. McCurdy is an associate professor of both Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine at The University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is the Co-Director of Critical Care Access and Flow for the University Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), where he is helping to refine an integrated systems approach to optimize patient care, with the flow of critically ill patients at UMMC coordinated at an institutional rather than unit level. In his role, he plays a senior role in developing an oversight model to ensure the smooth intake, distribution, and flow of critical care patients across our nine adult ICUs and downstream to less acute levels of care; he also actively supports the developing Regional Critical Care Network. In addition to his clinical time spent in the Medical ICU at UMMC, he serves as the Program Director of the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship and is the Co-Program Director of the Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine/Critical Care Medicine training program. He also created and is the medical director of the Critical Care Consult Service. In 2013, he, along with a couple of his fellows, created an online collaborative critical care education website (www.MarylandCCProject.com), which received the 2014 American Thoracic Society (ATS) Award for “Innovations in Fellowship Education.” He is co-editor of the “Concise Critical Appraisal” section of the Society of Critical Care Medicine's monthly online publication, “Critical e-Connections.” For multiple years, he has also served as an instructor for SCCM’s Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) course. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Baltimore Chapter of SCCM. Dr. McCurdy has also been actively involved at St. Luke's Hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, over the past five years. His efforts there have centered on educating the Haitian physicians and conducting clinical research for the purpose of establishing a long-term, sustainable medical infrastructure that seamlessly integrates low-cost technology and high-quality education and patient care. His hope is that his group's work will serve generations of Haitians while also providing a framework for the creation of similar sustainable medical care throughout the globe's other resource-limited countries.
