Biography
E Matthew, age 65, brings to the Board more than 40 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, with significant management, business development and operations expertise. Mr. Emmens began his career in international pharmaceuticals with Merck & Co., Inc., where he helped to establish Astra Merck, the joint venture between Merck and Astra AB of Sweden, later becoming its President and CEO. A recognized biotech and pharma leader, Mr. Emmens served as President, Pharmaceuticals, for Merck KGaA; CEO and Chairman of Shire PLC; and President, CEO and Chairman of Vertex Pharmaceuticals. While at Shire, Mr. Emmens engineered an extraordinary revitalization, transforming Shire into one of the top specialty biopharma companies in the world. Mr. Emmens holds a B.S. in Business Management from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
