Biography

Heather Harewood is currently a Lecturer in Public Health. She holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Biology and MBBS and the Doctor of Public Health (high commendation) from UWI and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Birmingham (UK). Heather was invloved in the administration and delivery of the MPH, Cave Hill as an Associate Lecturer from 2009 prior to joining the faculty full time in 2015. She worked for many years as a Medical Officer of Health with the Ministry of Health Barbadosand held administrative responsibilty for the delivery of Public Heath and primary care services, the preparation of annual estimates of expenditure using results of healthcare evaluation and needs assessments to develop proposals to fund new and ongoing programmes. Additional responsibilities included clinical duties in the Maternal and Child Health clinics, teaching Officers in the planning and delivery of health education programmes and collaboration with the Ministry of Health at the policy level including acting on several occasions as Senior Medical Officer of Health. Medical undergraduates: heather coordinates and lectures on Health Services Management and lectures in Health and Environment and Understanding Research courses. She is also involved in the teaching and assessment of medical undergraduates in Child Health and Family Medicine. Bachelor of Health Sciences: Lectures on the Health Services Management course, a member of the BHS cirriculum comittee. Postgraduate (MPH): Heather coordinates and lectures on Environmental Health and Health Economics courses and co-ordinates and lectures on the Family Helth and Health Crae Systems courses and supervises student research.

Research Interest

Heather's research interest are Maternal and Child Health, environment and health and workshops wellness.  Most recently she has conducted research exploring experiences and perceptions of cancer patients in accessing health care.
