Biography
Dr. Michael Brei is currently a Lecturer in Economics at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. Prior to this, he held the position of Assistant Professor at the University Paris Ouest. His research has examined the role of banks during financial crises, the role of government-owned banks in the crisis resolution, the effect of bank bailouts on bank lending and risk taking, as well as the potential effects of the new Basel III capital regulation on the pro-cyclicality of the banking sector. Dr. Brei has published in recognised international journals including the Journal of Banking and Finance, Economic Policy, Journal of International Money and Finance, Journal of Financial Stability, and the Emerging Markets Review. His work on bank rescues and bank risk has been cited in the international media such as in the International Harald Tribune and Financial Times Alphaville. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Bonn, where he also obtained his Diploma (MSc equivalent) in Economics.
