Dr. Dawei Liu

Biography

Dr. Dawei Liu received his DDS in 1990, certificate and MS in orthodontics in 1994 from China Medical University. He received his PhD in bone biology from Beijing Medical University (now Peking University) in 1997. He was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Orthodontics at the Royal Dental College (now Aarhus University), Denmark from 1999 to 2002, and at Indiana University until 2005 when he moved to Marquette University. Currently, Dr. Liu is the Pre-doctoral Program Director and Research Director in the Department of Developmental Sciences/Orthodontics at Marquette University. Through the years, Dr. Liu has focused his research on the investigation of the effects of mechanical perturbation (e.g. vibration) on orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption with the goals of shortening treatment time and reducing the risk of root resorption in clinical orthodontic patients. His research has been supported by a variety of funds including the American Association of Orthodontics Foundation (2005-2008), European Orthodontic Society (2006-2008), and Marquette University Start-up fund. Due to his research achievements, Dr. Liu has received the Robert M. Ricketts Sunflower Orthodontics Fellowship Award (2006), Alice L. Jee Memorial Young Investigator Award under the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (2006, 2007), Willie and Earl Shepherd Fellowship Award (2007) and Orhan C. Tuncay Teaching Fellowship Award (2008). Dr. Liu has been invited to speak on the Moyers’ symposium (2009, 2014) and on the annual meeting of the American Association of Orthodontists (2010). In 2009, Dr. Liu completed his U.S. orthodontic training and received his certificate and MS in orthodontics from Marquette University. In 2009 he also attended the Academy of Academic Leadership Sponsorship Program (AALSP) supported by the AAO and the American Dental and Educational Association (ADEA). Dr. Liu is an active member of the AAO, EOS, ASBMR and ORS. He serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and as a reviewer for several other journals.
