Andrés Gluski

Biography

 During his tenure as President and CEO since 2011, Andrés has led a major reorganization and cost savings program that has transformed the company, resulting in over $250M in annual savings to-date with an additional $150M in annual savings targeted by 2020. He has also initiated an asset sales program that has generated roughly $4B in proceeds and dramatically simplified the company’s operating structure by exiting from many high-risk countries. This has allowed AES to focus on the markets in which it has the greatest comparative advantage. During this period, AES has paid down approximately one-third, or $2.1B, of its parent company debt and initiated a quarterly dividend, which has grown to $0.48 per share. Andrés has overseen the largest construction program in AES’ history, with more than 5,000 MW of new power generation completed. The company has also recently signed an agreement to acquire sPower, the largest independent solar developer in the United States. AES is a diversified power generation and utility company, with 35,000 MW of capacity from a mix of fuel sources, including renewables and thermal generation, and has more than 9 million distribution customers. The company is a world leader in the deployment of battery-based energy storage and grid stability with 208 MW in operation and 268 MW under construction, contracted or in advanced stage development. Under Andrés’ leadership, first as COO and currently as CEO, AES’ operational excellence was recognized with an unprecedented five of the last nine International Edison Awards given by the Edison Electric Institute for innovation and operational improvements. Andrés established sustainability and corporate social responsibility goals that resulted in AES’ inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for North America for the past three years and designation as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for four years in a row by the Ethisphere® Institute. Prior to his tenure as COO, Andrés served as President for Latin America and CEO of AES Gener in Chile and La Electricidad de Caracas in Venezuela. Andrés held senior positions in banking, telecom, the IMF and the public sector before joining AES in 2000.  Andrés is a magna cum laude graduate of Wake Forest University and earned his MA and PhD in economics from the University of Virginia. He has been invited to serve as an expert witness at US Congressional hearings on the subject of energy policy and Latin America. In 2012, he was named International CEO of the year by Latin Trade Magazine. From 2013 to 2016, he served on President Obama’s Export Council. Andrés currently serves on the US-Brazil CEO Forum and the US-India CEO Forum. He is a member of the Board of The AES Corporation, Waste Management and AES Gener. He is also Chairman of the Americas Society/Council of the Americas and Director of the Edison Electric Institute.
