Biography
Dr. Steven Gitelis has been an integral part of AlloSource’s growth since the company’s inception, playing an active role in new product development. His commitment to the donation community spans several decades as the Medical Director of the Tissue Bank of Illinois. Dr. Gitelis is deeply devoted to Rush University, having spent much of his career there. He serves as Dean of Surgical Services and Associate Chief Medical Officer for surgery, and has the responsibilities of a surgeon in chief. He is also President of the Rush Medical Staff, Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and serves on multiple committees. Dr. Gitelis received his Doctor of Medicine from Rush Medical College in 1975 and completed an internship in general surgery and a residency in orthopedic surgery at the Medical Center. He then completed fellowships in orthopedic oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and the Rizzoli Institute in Bologna, Italy, and returned to Rush in 1981. He also was a commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Internationally recognized in the field of orthopedic oncology, Dr. Gitelis has been a visiting scholar and visiting professor at dozens of hospitals and universities on five continents.
