Peter Waters

Biography

 Peter joined Gilbert + Tobin as a partner in 1989 and specialises in Competition and Regulation and technology. Peter has worked on telco joint ventures, regulatory, interconnection, wholesale contracting, numbering, IP peering and spectrum licensing issues throughout the region. Peter has experience in complex structuring issues which require an understanding of the intersection between technical, regulatory, competition law and commercial issues.  He has been involved in the establishment of large scale telecommunications and IT joint ventures, including the deployment of the world’s first large scale HFC local broadband network, in major telecommunications-related mergers in Asia Pacific and in Europe and 3G network deployment in Australia and Europe. Peter’s understanding of the IT and communications environment also has allowed him to provide strategic legal advice to new economy businesses, such as portals, PKI providers, xDSL service providers, electronic cash and smartcard applications and Application Service Providers. Peter has worked on the early life cycles of many new economy firms, focusing on helping them realise and bring to market their technology. Peter is an active participant in Gilbert + Tobin's pro bono activities. He was Chairman of the Communications Law Centre, a major public interest body in Australia. He completed his Master of Laws at Harvard Law School on a Fulbright Scholarship.
