Biography

Andrew completed his PhD in 2005. His major research goal is the development of strategies to treat and prevent obesity. In 2007 he initiated a research program dedicated to study of brown adipose tissue in humans during his prior appointment at RMIT University Department of Medical Sciences. In 2009 he moved to Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, to Prof Bronwyn Kingwell’s highly successful Metabolic and Vascular Physiology Laboratory. Here, with a clear emphasis on clinical translation and with well-established collaborations within the Baker Institute and The Alfred Hospital Departments of Cardiology and Nuclear Medicine, Andrew was able to initiate higher impact and innovative work in the study of brown fat in humans. Leading this research program under continued guidance from Prof Kingwell, the group is becoming established as a laboratory with expertise in this field. Andrew has a multi-disciplinary track record with publications in the fields of exercise and metabolic physiology and cell biology in models including immortalised and primary cell culture, animals and human metabolic and clinical studies. This career progression has resulted in development of skills in cell biology, whole animal and human physiology and molecular biology.
