Biography

Dr Melanie Ziegler is currently a Research Fellow at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in the Atherothrombosis and Vascular Biology Laboratory. Dr Melanie Ziegler obtained her PhD in 2012 from the University of Hohenheim, Germany, developing and characterising bispecific, recombinant fusion proteins and validating their effects on myocardial repair mechanisms. Dr Ziegler published the key findings from her PhD in Circulation and for this work, she has been awarded the Gotthard-Schettler-Award at the annual meeting of the German Society for Atherosclerosis Research. In 2013, Dr Ziegler joined the Atherothrombosis and Vascular Biology Laboratory at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute and has been awarded a 2-years overseas fellowship from the German Research Foundation (DFG) to undertake postdoctoral training here at Baker. Her research projects focus on early diagnosis of minimal cardiac ischaemia based on molecular imaging of activated platelets and different antibody or cell-based targeted therapies to treat myocardial infarction. Furthermore, her research interest is in cell infiltration and especially the role of platelets after transient ischaemia.
