Dr Xiaowei Wang

Senior Research Fellow
Atherothrombosis and Vascular Biology
Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute
Australia

Biography

Dr Wang was trained as a sonographer for echocardiography prior to her research career, therefore her work has a strong focus on translational cardiovascular research. Dr Wang’s work spans across several scientific fields, including physics, chemistry, biology and biotechnology, and uniquely combines both basic research and translational development of future diagnostic tools to be used in patients. Her research focuses on preclinical molecular ultrasound imaging for diagnostic and theranostic (simultaneous diagnosis, therapy and monitoring of treatment efficacy) purposes. Her other research interests are targeted drug therapy and the use of micro/nanoparticles for targeted delivery of drugs. Dr Wang has presented her work at numerous conferences. She has been awarded 10 international and 9 national travel grants, 11 Young Investigator Awards, and nomination as Ralph Reader Prize Finalist (CSANZ 2011). Dr Wang is also a founding member of the Australian Society of Molecular Imaging (ASMI) in 2013 and the chair-organiser of the inaugural ASMI Scientific Meeting in 2015, and has been an appointed board member, as well as treasurer, since the official launch of the society in 2015. Dr Wang was also awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Paul Korner Innovation Award by the National Heart Foundation.

Research Interest

Molecular imaging with ultrasound, photoacoustics and MRI, Targeted delivery of drugs and DNA/RNA, Contrast agents and vehicles (nano/microparticles) for drug delivery.
