Biography
Among positions of responsibility held have been those of English language Coordinator at the Faculty of Arts, University of Malaya (1990-91) and Director of Studies at the Bond University English Language Institute (1993). He was a major figure in the Malaysian theatre scene and set up his own professional theatre company, Theatre Arts, which staged royal and public performances and ran drama classes for children. In addition, he was the English language anchor on the Malaysian TV3 "Sekapur Sirih" programme in 1987. The experience he gained in this field is being put to good use at Bond, where he teaches drama-based courses. These courses were recognized in a publication (Ballantyne, R., Bain, J. and Packer, J. (1997) "Reflecting on University Teaching: Academics' Stories", AGPS, Canberra), which identified innovative teaching methods. In 1997, Bond University nominated him for the Australian Awards (Institutional) for University Teaching. In 1998, he was invited to be an advisor on applications for the 1999 National Teaching Development Grants. In 2009, he received the Bond University Inaugural Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching of International Students and the Faculty of Faculty of Society & Design Inaugural Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching of International Students. Chamkaur has also directed and staged major productions at Bond since 1991 ("Twelve Angry Jurors" [1991 & 2005], "The Proposal [1992 & 2006]", "My Apology" and "The Lesson").
