Biography

David is a Professor in the School of Physics of the University of Melbourne. Following the completion of his PhD in 1985 David spent 4 years working at Caltech (USA) and the University of Oxford (UK) as a postdoctoral research fellow. His research expertise is in the field of ion beam physics, particularly in the use of focused ion beams for materials modification and analysis. He has developed single ion implantation techniques for the deterministic doping of semiconductor devices and for charge injection and transport studies. A key outcome to date, with his CQC2T collaborators, has been the successful fabrication of a nanoscale device that has demonstrated the control and readout of single electron and nuclear spins. This device is being used to test some of the key functions of a revolutionary device for quantum computation and communication constructed in silicon at CQC2T. He has been a finalist in the Australian Awards for University Teaching and has published over 260 papers in scientific journals as well as 1 book. He served as Head of the School of Physics at the University of Melbourne from 2008–2103 and as President of the Australian Institute of Physics from 2005 to 2006. He is a Fellow of the AIP and the Institute of Physics UK. He organises and presents the annual “July Lectures in Physics” program of public lectures aimed at providing an insight into fundamental questions in physics.
