Biography
Allan started his veterinary career at the R(D)SVS, University of Edinburgh as a mature student in 1988. Having previously completed a BSc.Agric degree at the University of Natal in South Africa and farmed in Zimbabwe. After graduating he completed a year of farm animal practice in the SW of England before returning to Edinburgh as a locum demonstrator in equine reproduction and medicine. After carrying out various locum tenens in the UK he returned to Zimbabwe, opening up a new rural veterinary practice north of Harare. The instability of the rural economy prompted an indirect move to Australia via Beijing and the UK where he practiced primarily equine stud medicine. In 2002 he obtained Membership of the ANZCVS in equine medicine, and in veterinary reproduction in 2006. In 2008 he obtained Diplomate status of the American College of Theriogenologists (Veterinary Reproduction) via the alternate/practitioner route. He joined the CSU staff in July 2012. In March of 2013 he was registered with the RCVS as a specialist in veterinary reproduction (theriogenology), and in December 2014 with the AVBC as a specialist in veterinary reproduction (theriogenology). He is married to English born veterinarian Viki Brookes, who has just completed an epidemiology PhD at the University of Sydney, with whom they have three children: Nadia, Laurence and Harriet.
