Anantanarayanan Raman

Biography

Raman comes from an intensive teaching background. For several years he taught Ecology, Environmental Biology, and Forestry to undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University of Madras. During his tenure in Madras, he participated in teaching through the distance-education mode in addition to teaching to internal enrolled students. He taught a variety of environment and ecology related courses. He holds a bachelor's, master's (Biology), and doctoral degrees in Ecology. His strengths arise out of his extensive international teaching and research experience. As a pre-doctoral scholar, he studied subcellular plant physiology and electron microscopy at Louis Pasteur University, Strasbourg, France for nearly 24 months. This training enabled him to develop a new approach in studying insect-plant interactions. Population and chemical ecology interested him in later years and using sedentary insect models, he characterized the behaviour of selected plant-feeding insects. In 1990 he worked in America winning the prestigious Fulbright grant. This was followed by a visiting lectureship at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, supported by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).
