Biography
Andrew trained as a mental health and general nurse, and as a teacher in England. He has a MA in State, Policy and Social Change from Portsmouth and a PhD from La Trobe. Andrew's doctoral thesis was an exploration of the decline of moral treatment as the treatment of choice in nineteenth century Australian lunatic asylums. Andrew has previously worked at the University of South Australia, Flinders University and La Trobe University. He has published in the areas of mental health nursing, history, and health services management, and is currently researching into Holocaust mental health nursing, body ornamentation as a validator of self-concept and the workplace realities of rural and remote mental health nursing. Andrew has attracted about half a million dollars in research funding and is a reviewer and editor for a range of professional nursing journals. Andrew is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators (ANZAHPE). Andrew currently supervises PhD candidates who are exploring; workplace bullying in the operating suite; delayed cancer diagnosis in rural areas; mental health risk categorisation in emergency departments; and the complexities of palliative care in people with persistent and enduring mental illness.
