Paul Scott

Biography

Following undergraduate studies in microbiology and biochemistry at the University of Sydney Paul completed a coursework masters degree in biotechnology at the University of New South Wales. Subsequently, he completed a PhD program in the Department of Microbiology, Monash University, Australia. His PhD thesis looked at the development of gene cloning protocols for the human and animal pathogenic bacterium Clostridium perfringens. Immediately after his PhD studies Paul was appointed as a lecturer in microbiology and molecular biology at the Central Queensland University, a position he held from 1992-1999. Nexty, he worked for 2 years as a postdoctoral research scientist at the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique, Bordeaux, France. Since July 2001 Paul has worked as a research fellow at the University of Queensland, firstly with the School of Agronomy and Horticulture (2001-2004) and next with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Integrative Legume Research. Research Interests For the last five to six years the major interest has been with the tree legume, Pongamia pinnata, which has emerged as a strong feedstock candidate for biodiesel and aviation fuel production. This plant is a new crop and much of my work is involved in the development and domestication of this legume species using functional genomics, genetic transformation, clonal propagation, agronomic and silviculture approaches.
