Research Interest
I am an ecotoxicologist (environmental toxicologist) interested in the way that environmental contaminants affect aquatic wildlife (particularly fish and invertebrates). Using biochemical markers my research aims to indicate the presence of pollutants, their broad chemical structure, their likely source(s), and extrapolate these data to suggest any potential effects at higher levels of organisation (community and populations). This allows the identification of hotspots of contamination exposure in fishes, and predict how fish stocks might be altered over time in response to a variety of stressors. Such information is vital to managers of aquatic systems (both marine and freshwater) in stopping the entry of these important contaminants and dealing with them appropriately once they are released.
