Biography
Since completing Jennifer McIlwain have spent the last 11 years working on coral reef systems in the northwest Indian Ocean (Arabian Sea, Arabian Gulf and Red Sea) and the west Pacific (Mariana Islands, Micronesia and the Philippines). His research in this period covered a broad range of topics under the overarching theme of Reef Fish Population Dynamics and included investigations of larval replenishment patterns, population connectivity, age-demographics of adult reef fish, fish movement using acoustic telemetry and the efficacy of Marine Protected Areas. To answer some of the most challenging questions in tropical fisheries research his approach has been to use a multitude of techniques such as genetics, demography, population modelling and acoustic tagging. Mentoring and development of outstanding student researchers is an integral part of what Jennifer McIlwain do, with development of a diverse and motivated student research group being seen as the key to obtaining results. Being an expatriate researcher/teacher has provided him with incredible opportunities for studying different tropical marine systems and their linkages to peoples with different cultural perspectives. From these experiences has come a truly global perspective on the processes influencing tropical marine communities.
