Biography
Thomas Franzen is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Curtin Institute for Radio Astronomy. My research history has focused on radio source populations. During my Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge I conducted the deepest survey of radio sources at 15GHz (the 10C survey). In my Postdoc at CSIRO Astronomy & Space Science in Sydney, I have furthered this research with an ATCA 20-GHz survey (the AT20G-deep pilot survey). This work (see Franzen et al. 2014) has revealed a new population of compact, flat-spectrum sources, below 5 mJy, which is not predicted in current theoretical models; these are likely to constitute some of the youngest and most active radio galaxies in the Universe. I am an active member of EMU, the wide field radio continuum survey planned for the ASKAP telescope, which will provide deep coverage at 1.4 GHz of the whole Southern Sky. I have played a key role in the analysis of the data from the Australia Telescope Large Area Survey, which covers about 7 square degrees of the sky at 1.4 GHz to the planned 10 microJy/beam rms of EMU and is being used as a pathfinder for EMU. I am currently drawing on new survey data from the Murchison Wide-field Array to unravel the nature and evolution of the low radio frequency source population, exploiting overlaps with many other radio and multi-wavelength surveys as a member of the GLEAM team.
Research Interest
My research interests are radio continuum surveys, radio galaxy populations and evolution, diffuse radio emission associated with galaxy clusters and data reduction software, particularly imaging and source finding.
