Albert Foong

Biography

Albert is a registered psychologist and a clinical registrar, who has completed Master’s level training. He believes that change first occurs from within a person – starting with their thinking (cognitions), emotions, and their behaviours. Once these have changed positively, the effects then ripple outwards to their lives, work, and relationships. Accordingly, he has trained in a variety of new-generation Cognitive Behavioral Therapies (CBTs) for focused work on one’s thinking and actions. His other main interest is Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), an active psychodynamic therapy that works directly on the client’s emotions and their unconscious lives. This creates a combination of skills that tailors the treatment to what the client wants and needs – whether they prefer short-term cognitive and behavioural change focused on the here-and-now, or deeper psychodynamic work exploring feelings and childhoods. His experience has been in various community counseling services, as well as medical centres and private practice. Patients have presented with a wide spectrum of difficulties. These range from short-term and acute to long-term and chronic and from existential to concrete. Throughout all of this, he keeps an eye on helping clients heal through individuation. This means helping them find and strengthen their true self, separate from unhealthy family dynamics, resolve childhood traumas, thrive and find meaning in the long term. All methods used are scientific evidence-based therapies, which are applied with his characteristic gentle and client-centered approach to create a safe and accepting atmosphere. He also has a personal commitment to ethical behaviour, such as compassion and honesty.
