Biography
Dr Margolis’ research work is focused on DermatoEpidemiology and, more specifically, the epidemiology and treatment of chronic wounds. With respect to chronic wounds, it is important to realize that more than 7 million Americans suffer from these wounds and the US spends more than $10 billion per year caring for individuals, including their wounds and other medical problems. Dr Margolis runs an active funded research program and his research has been funded by sources including the NIH, FDA, AHRQ, industry partners and private foundations. His contributions are important to our current understanding and practice regarding the design, choice of surrogate endpoints and statistical analysis plan of studies addressing wound repair. The clinical assessments Dr Margolis innovated are now routinely incorporated into clinical trials designed to explore new treatments of venous leg and diabetic foot ulcers. Additional evidence of their importance is their incorporation into clinical treatment and evaluation guidelines used by insurers. He also has conducted studies on the genetics of atopic dermatology, severe cutaneous drug eruptions, antibiotic use in acne, and the safety of therapy for dermatologic illnesses. His work focuses on epidemiologic study designs, comparative effectiveness designs and clinical trials. He is the founding director of the Center for DermatoEpidemiology and Translation at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He has published more than 200 scientific papers and frequently presents at national and international meetings.
