Biography
Jan Nordbotten is a Professor in the Applied Mathematics department at the University of Bergen in Bergen, Norway, and is a visiting professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University. He also holds affiliations with the Norwegian Centers of Excellence and the Center for Integrated Petroleum Research and Subsurface CO2 Storage, emphasizing his interest in working as an applied mathematician in the truest sense of the word. Nordbotten is a lead investigator on multiple research programs at the University of Bergen. His core fields of research are within practical applications of multiscale methods, both as a tool for construction of numerical methods and as a way of deriving consistent simplified models for complex phenomena. This approach has proven particularly valuable when modeling storage of CO2 in geological formations, and has led to the development of most of the model equations and algorithms utilized by GSC. Recently, Nordbotten was awarded the inaugural Junior Scientist Prize awarded by the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematicians geosciences activity group. He has also been recognized as among the most promising future leaders in Norway.
