Biography
Dr Mathai is an Associate Professor at Victoria University, with more than 20 years’ experience in physiological research into the neuroendocrine control of fluid, electrolyte, temperature and energy balance and the interaction between macro and micronutrients on appetite, metabolism and body fat composition. He graduated with a PhD from the University of Melbourne and the Howard Florey Institute of Experimental Physiology and Medicine where his research focus was autonomic control of blood pressure. Following postdoctoral studies at the Max Planck Institute for Physiology and Clinical Research, he returned to the Howard Florey Institute and further developed his work on temperature regulation, nutrition and energy balance. Since joining Victoria University in 2008, he has translated his work on phytonutrients into clinical studies. The translation of Michael’s work into novel treatments for hyperlipidaemia and cardiovascular diseases and the promotion of exercise endurance is the basis behind Gordagen.
