Biography
Glenn Arendts obtained specialist qualifications in Emergency Medicine in 1999 and took up his position at CCREM in 2008. His major research interest resides with acute geriatric care in the ED. This research has both a clinical and systems of care focus. As a consultant emergency physician in large tertiary EDs, he seeks to translate his research into improved emergency care for older people.
Research Interest
Emergency care of residential aged care facility (RACF) patients - multifaceted research including the largest international epidemiological study of patients presenting to ED via RACF; intervention trials aiming to reduce RACF to ED transfer; and economic analysis of these programs. Prehospital ED demand reduction - observational and interventional studies in relation to paramedic initiated care as an alternative to ED transfer. ED Delirium Identification (EDDI) - multifaceted research including trials of cognitive assessment tools in the ED and projects to ED delirium identification and intervention. Discharge risk stratification and planning - a series of studies to assess the efficacy and cost effectiveness of programs to facilitate safe early discharge of older patients from ED, and prevent ED reattendance post discharge. Critical Illness in the elderly - observational and pilot interventional research aimed at improving our understanding of critical illness in older people, particularly sepsis.
